Our Principles

Our Principles

Unity does not adhere to specific dogmas, doctrines, rituals, rites, sacraments, or specific theological concepts. Instead, our founders developed five basic principles that can be used as a template for spiritual growth. These principles allow each individual to experience a self-determined path for spiritual growth within the context of a safe and supportive community. Many people on the spiritual path have experienced enhanced spiritual growth through freedom rather than through restrictions often tied to traditional religious environments.

These principles are meant to be guidelines for spiritual growth. They provide freedom to experience the Divine in a meaningful way. As Paul said in his letter to the Galatians, "It is for freedom that Christ has set you free so do not become slaves of the law again." Unity provides a community that is based on freedom to experience and express spiritual truths. We use these spiritual principles as a template for our growth.

We invite you to explore Unity's Five Basic Principles as to how each may apply in your life. You may find a slightly different wording of the five basic principles on our materials, and at other Unity centers worldwide, all with the intent to enhance personal understanding.

There is only one Presence and one Power, God, all-good, everywhere present.

All human beings are Divine - having the Christ Spirit within them.
Our very essence is of God, and therefore we are also inherently good.

Human beings co-create their experiences by the activity of their thinking.
Everything in the manifest realm has its beginning in thought.
This is also known as the 'Law of Attraction' and the 'Law of Mind Action' - "Thoughts held in mind produce after their kind."

Prayer and meditation are methods of communion with the God of our Being.

Prayer, linked with creative thinking and gratitude, heightens the connection with God-Mind and therefore brings forth wisdom, healing, prosperity and more.

In the silence of meditation, we let go and experience our Oneness with God.

As we breathe and release, we know the Divine Intelligence is taking care of the 'how'.

Knowing and understanding the laws of life (also called Truth) is not enough.
A person must also live the truth he or she knows.
